Here Comes the Science Bit...
Did you know that there are things we can do... 'voluntary actions', scientifically proven things that increase our wellbeing, the lasting good feelings, rather than the quick highs of pleasure, and this accounts for 40% of our happiness levels.
Behaviours that affect 40% of our happiness
While 50% is genetically determined or as Sonia Lyubormirsky describes it - ‘a baseline or potential for happiness to which we are bound to return, even after major setbacks or triumphs’ and 10% is life circumstances... and while we can’t change this baseline, and we have limited control over what happens to us, we can choose to adopt some ‘intentional activities’, things we do and think, that have been proved in various studies to increase people’s levels and happiness over and above the baseline and in the face of some of those life circumstances.
Putting the science into practice.
and that's what our 6 themes or areas of happiness habits are about - adopting behaviours that can make a difference to our wellbeing - as early and as easily as possible, so that when that stuff does happen, we have some strategies to deal with it. The list isn't exhaustive, and it's not a magic remedy, and we're not about coming up with new behaviours, we're about taking the brilliant academics' stuff and translating into things kids and families can easily do in the real world.
